CONTENTS : Sir Gilbert Scott's Recollections of Buckinghamshire (Ian Toplis, editor); The Journal of Elizabeth George of Dadford (George Clarke, editor); personal Reminiscences of the Buckinghamshire Volunteers by Owen Peel Wethered (Ian Beckett, editor); Oscar Blount's Notes on Bulstrode (Hugh Hanley, editor).

The four memoirs which appear together in this volume cover a wide range of Buckinghamshire life in the 19th century. Though selections of them have been published in the past, they are all printed here complete for the first time.

Sir Gilbert Scott's autobiographical account describes his background and early life in North Buckinghamshire up to the start of his successful architectural career.

Elizabeth George provides a highly individual view of affairs at Stowe in the 1840s, just before the 2nd Duke's downfall, as seen by a loyal but not uncritical tenant.

Owen Peel Wethered gives an inside story of the formation and fortunes of the Bucks Volunteers, that worthy Victorian predessor of the Home Guard.

Oscar Blount's historical notes on Bulstrode, near Gerrards Cross, incorporate his personal recollections of the house and the many distinguished guests who were entertained there.
