This site has no database or search facility, and it isn't meant to: we highlight a limited range of titles and we have tried to make it easy for you to browse. Moreover, this site is designed to complement our retail shop. However if you are from Southern Kentucky and have an aunt with a middle name like 'Aylesbury' or 'Milton Keynes' and wish to buy her a history of one of these (oh, so pleasant) towns, please do so; or if you live in a mudhut in the South Australian outback and have difficulty finding a local bookshop, please contact us. We also welcome customers from Macclesfield, Little Kettle, Parson's Bottom, Enfield, even Wendover.... ...we welcome all customers, but remain firstly a bookshop made of bricks and mortar.
We have higlighted books on our immediate locality - that is Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns. We have listed them in broad categories: Chilterns
and Buckinghamshire | town and village
histories | personalities | rural
life | transport | buildings
| walking books | cycling
books | maps
In response to the question 'What should my child read next?', a question always asked, at least in Wendover, we have listed some reading books that we think are appropriate for nine to thirteen year olds. We do not pretend that these are the 'best' books, but rather an honest (if quirky) selection chosen from our own likes and from those of our junior customers. When finished we will arrange them also in three broad but overlapping age bands: books for 9-13 year olds | books for 6-8 year olds | the first bookshelf Of course reading is not about 'reading ages' - unless you see your child as only a notice board to pin school merit badges - but about enjoyment and about keeping our imagination alive! If your child has enjoyed one book or one author, we recommend further books which we think they might enjoy.
We have recommended books on the following subjects: popular history books | popular science books We have also made suggestions for reading groups, highlighting a few titles by particular authors: literary
ladies | literary gents |
